There are questions I get asked occasionally, that most cosplayers get asked, so I figure I may as well answer some of them here, in case anyone is curious.


1) When did you start Cosplaying?

I started cosplaying around 5 years ago or so.


2) What did you cosplay first? How was it?

Shit from Naruto. Umino Iruka, since I was too cheap/lazy/ uneducated to buy a wig and try to style it. The only parts of that I made were the Jounin vest, which I made from scratch. For a first-ever real sewing effort, I'm told it wasn't that bad. I had working scroll-pockets, working snaps, and foam inside the collar piece to hold it up. Looking back on it now, I cringe, but we all have to start somewhere.


3) Anything you regret doing?

Not really, but sort of: I used to be a Narutard, until some of the other people in the fandom ruined it for me and I lost interest. We don't talk about that.


4) Do you commission your costumes, or make them yourself?

I've commissioned the following costumes: Miles Edgeworth, Jade Curtiss, and HRE. I remade Miles' jabot, and used a different shirt, and with Jade, I remade the bootcovers and gloves using different materials, and using the originals as a loose pattern. I only use the jacket (w/different buttons) and belt with Jade. Holy Roman Empire was entirely commissioned (for me by *Shahnida).

Most costumes I either cobble together from thrift store finds, or make from scratch when I can't find what I need. While I'd love to make more things from scratch, it often comes down to '15$ for this in a thrift store, plus some time and work spent on altering, or 45$-60$ for fabric + notions, plus more time than the previous option?' Added on top of the cost of wigs and props, it gets really expensive, really quickly. It's more a case of being poor than being lazy. Although I can be lazy, too.


5) Where did you learn to sew?

Technically, I didn't, I'm entirely self-taught. I got given a sewing machine for my birthday one year, and I'd messed around with hand-sewing in order to mend my own clothes before, but that was about it. I kind of took some fabric, read the instruction manual, and gave it my best shot. I've peeked at a few books to explain things like what selvage is, and how to ease a sleeve before sewing it in, but I've never had any formal instruction. Proving that if I can do this junk, almost anyone can.


6) Who does your wigs? What do you use? How many do you have?

I do my wigs myself, although occasionally I'll ask for some help, an extra pair of hands, or ask how someone else did something, and then play around with it a bit from there.

I prefer Kanekalon wigs from Amphigory and Cosworx, with the occasional ebay wig from China, and my favorite styling products are got2b freeze spray and styling glue, aquanet, and good old hot water. As for the actual number of wigs I have... hoo boy. Lemme go count 'em.

22 wigs, for the full count. That includes a few I'm not going to wear ever again, and one that goes only on a prop.


7) What's your favorite?

Probably Klavier. I have a lot of fun wearing it, even if I can see room for improvements.



8) So how many cosplays have you actually done?

This is a tricky question. There are costumes that were entirely made of unique new pieces, and then costumes where the wig/ accessories/ and props were the only new parts, and the base clothing remained the same. Then there are also costumes I made for others, but didn't or can't wear myself.
